For some towns it can be hard to understand what that identity is, but Gunnedah’s identity was on display for all who attended last weekend’s 130th Gunnedah Show.
From the annual grand parade, to the wool exhibit to the showgirl competition, Gunnedah’s diverse and rich identity was the showcase and enjoyed by visitors young and old across the show’s three days.
The Gunnedah Show Society should be congratulated for their tireless efforts in organising an event full of action for everyone.
For our younger community members, the event was full of opportunities to build long lasting memories surrounded by family and friends.
While for the adults, it took us back to when we were holding our parents hands and taking in the sights, sounds and smells of the eagerly anticipated event.
Everyone remembers the excitement of picking out their annual showbags, screaming their lungs out on numerous amusement rides and tucking into a piping hot dagwood dog.
It’s these memories that keep us coming back to support our local show year after year.
130 years of the Gunnedah Show is no fluke, every year the Gunnedah Show Society plans a memorable event and carries on the traditions laid down in the lead up to the first show in 1889.
In turn, we as a community continue to support the show as it annually provides the next generation with life-long memories and brings us adults back to our childhood.
Anyone who questions the relevance of the Gunnedah Show in today’s modern world need look no further than the excellent turn out in this year’s showgirl and livestock competitions.
Exhibitors took great pride in showing their sheep, cattle and wool and such was the quality, you’d be forgiven for forgetting the region is enduring a long-running dry spell.

Meanwhile the region’s strong women of tomorrow shone through in the showgirl competition, setting an example for young girls to follow in the future and making the decision to crown champions in the two categories a difficult one for judges.
With visitors flooding into the showgrounds across the three days, there is no doubt that the 130th edition of the Gunnedah Show was one of the best to date.
Here’s to the next 130 Gunnedah Shows.
