Gunnedah’s Yvonne Argent is getting her knitting needles ready for Thursday’s Knitted Knockers Knitathon.

The Emerald Hill CWA member is hoping for a big turn-out at Gunnedah’s CWA rooms on Barber Street, with knitters to gather from 9.30am-3.30pm.
The aim is to knit as many cotton prosthetics aka knitted knockers as possible in the time, so they can be distributed to cancer units for breast cancer patients.
Ms Argent was inspired to launch the knitathon after undergoing a double mastectomy last year. The Tamworth hospital was unable to offer her or fellow patients any prosthetics, which concerned her greatly. She has now set about to change that.
“Both my phones have been going crazy,” she said.
“It’s astounding.”
Ms Argent said there has been “nothing but support” for the knitathon, with people from all over Australia contacting her to see if they can help.
“I’m overwhelmed with the response,” she said.
The CWA member also issued a call to the CWA branches in the Namoi Group, and has received good support.
“The CWA always loves to have a cause like this,” Ms Argent said.
It will cost $3 per person to attend the knitathon on Thursday, April 19. Knitters are asked to bring their own needles – a set of four needles or a set of two needles (needles must be 3.75mm) or crochet hook (3.5mm). There is a specific pattern for the knitted knockers, which will be supplied at the knitathon.
McGrath breast care nurse Neridah Prentice will drop into the knitathon in the afternoon and take a load of prosthetics back to the North West Cancer Centre.
