Seniors were invited to read stories to toddlers on Tuesday, with children from Li’l Achievers Early Learning Centre coming along for books and craft.
On Wednesday, the library also launched literacy program Bookends, with a handful of seniors and children present.
The after-school program enables participants to “borrow” a senior for one-on-one reading assistance in a 20-minute block. The participants automatically become part of the 1000 Books After School program and any books they read in their sessions can be added to their tally sheets.
Bookends was launched by Gunnedah shire mayor Jamie Chaffey who said the council is “very supportive” of literacy programs.
“Without the support of the seniors, a program like this couldn’t happen,” he said.
“Your effort and your commitment to our youth is important for our community going forward,” he told the seniors.
“It’s another support mechanism for the youth that need that extra support in their growth in literacy, and it helps more seniors make connections in their community.
Cr Chaffey said he was thankful to the library team for its strong sense of initiative.
Bookends will be run every Tuesday and Thursday from 3pm-5pm and Friday from 3pm-4pm.
