Gunnedah is now a motorsport destination on the NSW events calendar and GME members have made their mark in 2017.
Members have competed right across NSW and at Bathurst, major GME hillclimb sponsor Darryl Morrison of H E Silo’s (Ford AU- XR8) together with GME president Wayne Grosser (Ford FPV–GS) and upcoming Junior Brock Casey (Holden Commodore ute) all contested the first two rounds of the NSW Hillclimb Championships at the famous Mount Panorama.
Grosser went on to contest all rounds of the NSW Hillclimb Series in his potent Ford.
Grosser was most pleased with his credible third in class in the NLBRR-02, over two litre road registered class, against stiff opposition.
Grosser has rated Gunnedah’s Apex Drive “Mount Porcupine” Hillclimb as the best public road hillclimb venue in NSW and Gunnedah is shortlisted for a NSW state level event assessment in future years.
GME general members help run annual hillclimb events and also participate locally at Tamworth Oakburn Park lapdash events.
For the March 25 Weeks of Speed Mount Porcupine Apex Drive Hillclimb, Gunnedah Shire Council, police and CAMS paperwork has been lodged and event entry forms will be available soon. Expression of interest (EOI) for a spot can be lodged at gme2380@gmail.com.
In other news, the “Mount Porcupine” Hillclimb, will celebrate its 50th anniversary in September this year. A special Hillclimb on September 2 is being planned. Four of the original 1968 entrants are expected to compete and an invite is extended to former participants to come out of retirement for the milestone.
Years ago all that was required to run a hillclimb event was a bit of bunting to keep spectators off the course. While bunting is still used, GME – in conjunction with Gunnedah Shire Council – have installed extra guardrail on three corners while the original surface has been reformed, widened and resurfaced, eliminating old bumps on the tourist road.
Water filled plastic barriers, tyre buffer packages and a chicane on the lead up to the hairpin are installed for each event. A Confederation of Australian Motorsport (CAMS) category C venue licence is held by GME.
On September 1, an outside operator will be coming to town to run a half mile aerodrome sprint, taking forward the work of GME and Tamworth Drag Racing Association in 2014.
GME will hold their next meeting on Wednesday at the Railway Hotel at 7.30pm. For information contact gme2380@gmail.com or 0427421503.
