Operation Drink Drive kicked off on Friday morning and runs until midnight on Sunday with officers expected to randomly breath test more than a thousand drivers in the New England North West.
And, drug drivers are also in their sights with lick-stick tests also part of the warning from police for drivers.
Highway patrol officers in Tamworth kick-started the operation a day early, setting up a random roadside testing site on Armidale Road.
Sergeant Michael Buko said any death on the road was one too many.
He said police were aiming to ensure the high-visibility blitz would deter drivers from running the gauntlet and getting behind the wheel after drinking.
“Drivers are still taking risks which is unacceptable and putting other people’s lives in danger,” Sergeant Buko said.
“People should organise another way home if they plan to consume alcohol or they will be in the police’s sights.

“Motorists are urged to drive to the conditions and always obey the road rules.
“Do the right thing.”
Hundreds of motorists have already been breath-tested by police on day one of the blitz with one driver copped a fine and a defect notice for a faulty trailer in Tamworth.
