The holiday program has a long history in Gunnedah with Scripture Union, however, a new team has come on board this year to run the family-friendly program, which is supported by local churches.
Director Ben Davis said the team of about 40 people will arrive in Gunnedah on January 13 to set-up for the week-long program, which includes kid’s club, Summerfest Cafe, a ladies night, trivia event, teen events, a combined church service, and blokes barbecue.
Mr Davis said he has experience running holiday programs in Nowra and Port Macquarie and visited Gunnedah in April last year to meet local ministers and check out the town ahead of Summerfest.
“I’m pretty excited,” he said.
“There’s a lot of unknown because although the program itself has been running a long time, we haven't been there,” he said.
“We’ll be interested to see what it looks like when we’re in the ground and we’d like to have an ongoing and fruitful continuation of the program.”
Kid’s club, Summerfest Cafe and teens events will kick off at Gunnedah High School on Monday, January 15 from 9.30am and will run until Friday.
There will be a special teens night on Friday, January 19, from 7.30pm-9pm, giving our youth an opportunity to make new friends, play games and hear from the Bible.
The ladies night on Monday, January 15 will focus on food, with a mini-workshop on creating a grazing board, followed by a talk. The cost is $5. For the men, there will a Blokes Barbecue on Friday, January 19, from 7pm. The cost is $10.
A combined church service will be held on Sunday, January 21, to wrap-up the week.
Mr Davis said he hoped to see plenty of people from the community at the events and encouraged locals to come along and check them out.
“We’re looking forward to meeting people from Gunnedah and having some country experiences,” he said.
Gunnedah Anglican Church’s Aiden Sibrava said the local churches were looking forward to hosting Summerfest and was grateful that Gunnedah High School was providing a space for it.
“We are thankful for their support in being able to provide Summerfest as an awesome opportunity for Gunnedah families,” Mr Sibrava said.
