Chelsea Ings made the long trip north worthwhile when she piloted the son of Magic Albert to a good win in the $20,000 Ehsman Kelpies Stud Class 3 Handicap (1200m).
It didn’t all go to plan, though, and Gavin Groth was a concerned trainer when Ings allowed Epic Decision to move up to race favourite Magic Gracie, then overtake and take a couple of lengths lead approaching the turn.
“I was concerned when he went to the front but he held on well,” Groth said.
Chelsea Ings said Epic Decision was pulling.
“So I just let him roll a little,” Ings said.
It was a winning formula as he strode clear and then set sail for the finishing post down the long Inverell straight.
While he had had enough at the post, he still had a good lead while the Michelle Fleming-trained Herecum Da Drums made up many lengths with a sustained finishing burst.
“He was good,” Groth said.
“He’s a nice little horse. Was a bit disappointing in Sydney but drew wide there.”
Epic Decision ran ninth in a Highway Handicap and while he might not have the chance to run in another Highway, his stablemate Jazzee Nicc who finished stoutly for third to Victory Vibes at Inverell, might have earned a Sydney trip.
