Mornington kicked off the day in fine fashion as Justin Carter (12) and Stan Gaynor (51) put on a 40-run opening partnership
“We brought Stan Gaynor up and he had a solid opening partnership with Justin Carter,” Mornington’s Pat Maher said.
Gaynor was elevated from second grade for the match and the opening batsman quickly proved himself.
“He’s new to the area and we didn’t know how good he was until we saw him bat a couple times,” Maher said.
After Mornington lost three quick wickets, Gaynor shared a 45-run partnership with Jason Rose (51).
“Jason Rose was good. He went out there and put on some faster runs. He upped the tempo to get us over 150,” Maher said.
Kookaburras shared the wickets around to have Mornington all out for 159.
Kookaburras then quickly took the upper hand.
Cameron Milne (56*) was in a rush and quickly notched up a half century.
“I don’t think I’ve seen Cameron bat better – plenty of shots were coming off the middle,” Maher said.
Kookaburras looked well in control before Sam Lumby (1-1) struck when he was introduced to the attack before Ben Hennessey (1-22) claimed a wicket in the following over which brought on the end of play as Kookburras finished at 2-72.
“We got a couple late wickets and to say where the games at, I’d say it’s pretty evenly poised," Maher said.
“If we can get Cameron and Shane Riordan out – I’m not too sure about the rest of their batting lineup as they’re a new side – in the first 10 overs we’ll be looking alright.
“It’s been a good game, played in the right spirit and lots of good banter out there.”
