Gunnedah Shire Council will be participating in this year’s garage sale trail weekend with locals able to sell their goods at Gunnedah Showgrounds on October 21.
The NSW EPA initiative last year saw 15,000 registered community sales across Australia with over two million products being listed for sale.
Gunnedah Waste Management Superintendent Sheridan Cameron said reusing items was a must to help minimize waste.
“Waste is a growing issue. As a nation, the amount of waste we churn out has grown six times faster than the population and in fact, the average Australian family now produces enough waste to fill a three bedroom house every year,” Gunnedah Waste Management Superintendent Sheridan Cameron said.
“While recycling is one solution, reusing items you no longer want is even better.”
Ms Sheridan encouraged everybody in the community to take part in the sale.
“Hosting a stall at council’s garage sale is free and all the buyers and sellers will be in the one place,” she said.
Kids are also being encouraged to reuse and recycle old goods with a colouring in competition.
Competitions for kids aged under 12 to under three are available with the winners to receive a free movie pass to the civic.
Entries for the colouring competitions can be picked up from the libary, the visitors center and the council’s administration building.
