The Peter Sinclair-trained gelding son of Lonhro, a $3 second favourite, won the annual picnic cup by almost a length and a half from the Gavin Groth-prepared About Time with Jane Clement’s Medal Of Glory another three and a half lengths away third.
It was Track Flash’s first start at Wean and handed his Moree syndicate a sixth win in 25 starts with their five-year-old, who had also won a trophy race at the Moree picnics in late May.
“He hasn’t been a bad little horse,” Sinclair said.
Purchased as a picnicer, he won four races last season, three of them “at the picnics”.
“He’s done a good job,” Sinclair said.
“He went from a maiden last year to win the Moree Picnic Cup and Wean Cup.”
Sinclair was among those that thought About Time was the horse to beat.
“I honestly thought before the race we couldn’t beat Gavin’s horse,” Sinclair said.
“(But) We got the better run in the race.”
Back second last, which is where he prefers to race, most of the journey “he worked his way into the race between the 600 and 400” to hit the front with around 300 to go.
Sinclair said About Time started to kick back late, but Track Flash held him off.
It was a fruitful trip for Sinclair with Favourite Sister and Cool Rules both running third.
The Stirling Osland-trained Winter had the biggest win of the day, the three-year old bay filly romping to a seven length win in the opening race of the meeting.
