Council has approved $7500 to roll out signage and butt-out bins for the smoke-free zone, which will stretch along the Kamilaroi Hwy from Tempest St to Henry St.
The NVI understands anyone caught smoking could be hit with a $110 on-the-spot fine if they refuse to butt out.
However, Gunnedah mayor Jamie Chaffey said the fine would only be used as a last resort.
“Our preference is not to come down with a big stick, we’d rather work with the community,” Cr Chaffey said.
“We don’t anticipate there will be any actions in relation to penalties.
“We live in a very respectful community.
“Any members of the community not complying with the ban, we’ll certainty be having strong conversations with them and making them aware it is a smoke-free zone.
“We want to make it a last resort to impose any penalties.”
Gunnedah Chamber of Commerce president Michael Broekman said the smoking hadn’t been raised as a problem by any local businesses.
“With the alfresco dining and other outdoor activities around the main street becoming more popular, particularly in the warmer months, it’s definitely something that needs to be looked at to improve the environment,” Mr Broekman said.
“There is also a littering problem with the cigarette butts, so hopefully making it a smoke free zone will improve that.”
