The branch has a goal of targeting 150 animals for de-sexing, micro-chipping and vaccination over a three-month period.
“We’re calling it Target 150,” member Maddison Lawback said.
“We’re targeting low-income earners so they must present a concession card or Centrelink Reference Number.”
On April 5, members presented the project to Gunnedah Shire Council, and has since submitted a proposal for consideration.
“We’re prepared to put in $10,000 and we’re asking council to match that. We’re also seeking to apply for a grant,” Ms Lawback said.
“We’re hoping to get some other funding to boost that up to help us meet our goal.”
Ms Lawback said if the council pitched in, the branch would hold a launch day to register interest in Target 150.
“It’s looking really positive,” she said.
“We’re really hoping they will get on board with us and do this for our community.
“Education is important and to start reducing our numbers.”
The branch hopes to kick-start Target 150 in September, the start of peak breeding time.
“One cat can produce 70,000 kittens in its lifetime,” Ms Lawback said.
“Cats actually stay on heat until they mate and have kittens.”
Ms Lawback said the branch had experienced an influx of animals lately, with an increasing number of dogs coming into its care from animal shelters.
“We are still looking for volunteers to help with fostering and care,” she said.
