Men of League Foundation’s (MOL) north west committee will host its annual charity golf day in Gunnedah on April 23, supported by special guest and former Newcastle Knights premiership forward Matt Parsons.
The four-person ambrose or four-ball par event and memorabilia auction promises plenty of action, on and off the course.
MOL north west committee treasurer Peter Haley said it is a great opportunity for the local league fraternity to come together and chip in for a charity close to all their hearts.
“Money raised goes to men, women and children of all ages from all levels of the game around Australia who are need of assistance,” Haley said.
“From referees to the junior league canteen worker, former bush footy players to ex-internationals…. we help the lowest to highest level.”
He highlighted MOL’s recent purchase of a mobility lifter for a Dunedoo teen with a junior league connection who has spinal muscular atrophy. But he said the MOL assistance extended past the cheque book.
“It’s more than just money, it’s things like popping into the hospital and having a chat with someone doing it tough,” Haley said.
He said the north west MOL branch, one of 40 local committees across Australia, is also one of the biggest in terms of distance. The coverage area stretches from Moree to Tamworth and all centres in between.
Last year’s charity golf day featured more than 100 players and guests including the legendary John “Bomber” Peard.
Haley encouraged Bulldogs players and past and present to dust off the irons for a round or two, or drop in for a drink and some social banter at the post-golf function.
Among items up for grabs at the memorabilia auction are Penrith Panthers and Newcastle Knights jerseys, personally signed by the 2017 teams. Also in the mix are limited edition, signed prints featuring Cowboys star Johnathan Thurston and Melbourne’s Cameron Smith. Golf costs $25 per player and includes lunch.
