Gunnedah’s Sunnyfield branch is leading that change in partnership with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
Sunnyfield’s regional manager Ada Maughan said the NDIS introduction meant those with a disability living in eligible areas, now had complete autonomy on services provided.
“It’s all about choice and control for the individual,” she said. “People’s plans are more flexible.”
So instead of being told what services will be delivered, those with a disability can choose what best works for them. But to effectively administer that support, Sunnyfield needs guidance about the types of services and activities the community seeks.
The provider will be holding a community consultation night on Thursday night in Gunnedah.
“There’s lots of opportunity to do things in different ways,” she said. “We want to ask the community, what other services or support does it want in place? What activities that haven’t been done before, could we introduce?”
Gunnedah’s Harrison Neader (pictured front page) is among those set to benefit from the changes. The 25-year-old was born with Neuhauser syndrome, a rare genetic disorder and requires continued care.
Mum Julie said the service changes and shared resources will mean better access for more individuals in the community. It will also mean an improved quality of life for Harrison with more “enriching experiences”.
This consultation complements the “big picture” feedback sought by council for its Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP), which focused more on infrastructure needs.
It’s not just from individuals that Sunnyfield is seeking feedback. The organisation is asking the whole community, including other service providers, to join the conversation and suggest ideas to help get the ball rolling for better disability access. Sunnyfield’s consultation is open to everyone and will be held at the old GS Kidd on Stock Rd from 6.30pm Thursday.
