GUNNEDAH Shire Council is still to receive the details of $694,000 in roads funding announced in the state Budget but would have liked to have seen money specifically allocated for Bloomfield Street and the new gateway area earmarked for east Gunnedah.

Council General Manager Eric Groth met with state Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson in Gunnedah two weeks ago to discuss council’s wishlist ahead of the budget handdown, and outlined some of its key priorities.
He said there was no specific allocation for Boundary Road and the intersection of the Oxley and Kamilaroi highways where there are plans to establish a new gateway to Gunnedah with potential commercial opportunities.
It was also hoped money would be specifically announced for the Bloomfield Street upgrade to cater for heavy vehicles.
The project comes under a new urban landuse strategy which has been labelled the most significant for council in 30 years.
Mr Groth welcomed the $2.5 million announced for the Oxley Highway which is understood to include overtaking lanes leading up to Keepit Dam.
It was hoped Hoss’s Causeway near Carroll would be allocated funding, however that is still to be made clear.
Gunnedah will also receive a new roundabout at the Marquis and Hunter Street intersections at a cost of $202,000 which forms part of government blackspot funding.
“It’s been on the books for some time and it is a blackspot because of previous incidents there,” Mr Groth said.
“It will be a roundabout similar to the one at View and George streets.
“We’ve had discussions about it and the issue is how to deal with a slip lane off Hunter Street into Marquis Street because it’s a busy intersection.”
