Cr Hasler did an interactive reading of Baby Bear, Baby Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle, asking the children questions and getting them to read some of the story.
“The kids were enthralled by the mayor’s storytelling skills; he really encouraged them to participate. He even had the parents getting into the story,” GoCo community hub worker and Junior Brain Games facilitator Kate Mackley said.
Following the story, the children did timed activities such as word jumbles, mazes and find the object, and then finished off with craft.
“The puzzles were a hit, they raced the timer to finish word jumble sand mazes, and beat the clock almost every time,” Ms Mackley said.
The theme of last week’s session was “families”, and this week the theme is “helping”, in line with Law Week. Senior Constable Sarah Hobson will be the guest reader.
Ms Mackley said themes gave children the opportunity to explore the group story in various ways.
“I am so pleased with the Junior Brain Games launch. We’re fortunate to have such a wonderful group of children involved,” she said.
The purpose of Junior Brain Games is to inspire a love of reading and allow children to learn together.
Junior Brain Games is held at the library every Wednesday from 3.30pm-4.30pm. Numbers are limited, so enrolment is essential. To enrol, contact Kate Mackley on 6740 2172 or email katemackley@infogunnedah.com.au
