Inspector Paul Johnston said the station was in need of people to take part in the Volunteer in Policing (VIP) program.
“It is one of the best extensions of the police force and the community working together and we are very happy with the idea,” Inspector Johnston said.
He said volunteers needed “credibility” and the ability to keep things confidential.
Volunteers work to support police in areas including victim care, assisting witnesses attending court, and taking part in community-based policing programs.
Applicants must be at least 18, be Australian citizens or have permanent resident status, have good communication skills and have “community credibility”.
Inspector Johnston said applicants would be screened, including a police record and fingerprint check, although he said results would not necessarily exclude someone from being approved.
Volunteers are trained by local police and are expected to work up to 16 hours a month.
