“I’ve been showing birds since before I left school,” the Gunnedah enthusiast, who has only recently returned to competition after some years out of the game, said.
“It’s the challenge of breeding and showing a good one,” he added.
His latest accolade was won at last month’s Wyandotte Club of Australia Centenary Show in Mudgee which featured exhibitors and judges from around Australia.
Of nearly 1000 wyandottes benched, a breed of foul from the United Kingdom, Smallpiece’s prized pullet was deemed Champion Bird of Show by the six-judge panel.
The Gunnedah fowl also won Champion Bantam of Show, Champion White Bird of Show and Champion White Bantam.
Ever the competitor, Peter kept his cards – and his award-winning hen – under wraps until show time.
“This pullet had not been shown before,” he said.
“I kept her for this show as I could see a lot of potential in her.
“She just came into feather at the right time.”
Peter benched five white wyandottes in total at the Mudgee exhibition which was celebrating 100 years of wyandottes in Australia.
Only one of Peter’s five entries did not receive a card.
He said to claim the Best in Show title at such a prestigious event was a high honour.
“For a breeder to breed something as good as this, is a good feather,” Peter said.
