Senior Constable Dianne Klante said police had received complaints from about eight people in the past two days.
"People have received calls from a man with what is believed to be an Indian accent saying we have your house under surveillance and you are going to be before the court because you haven't paid your tax bill," she said.
Senior Constable Klante said in some cases, the man had left a phone number on mobile phones, but police calls to the number had gone unanswered.
She said there was no indication the person was located locally, but could have selected names from the local phone book.
She advised people who received the calls not to panic, because the calls were bogus.
People who receive a call can contact Gunnedah police on 6742 9099 and report an ATO scam to ReportEmailFraud@ato.gov.au
