That was all it took for Year 9 St Mary’s College student to get started in the unorthodox riding discipline.
Now the Gunnedah star is a two-time Australian champion after winning the Australian Junior Trick and Roman Riding Titles at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
“She is very humble about it,” mum Cheryl said.
“It took a fair while for it to sink in.”
To win the trick title, Miah performed two compulsory tricks and three freestyle moves.
The roman ride requires the rider stand on top of a pair of horses and sometimes more.
Cheryl said it was the countless hours Miah spent refining her technique that laid the platform for her big wins in Sydney.
“She was very calm; she knew what to do and had lots of practice,” she said.
Her Quirindi-based instruction was led by Sally Stockwell from High Velocity Trick Riding, a company that performs at shows and events around the state.
It was also where Miah had her first trick riding experience.
“She saw a demonstration at Tamworth when she was about nine,” Cheryl said.
“And we gave her a lesson for her 10th birthday.”
The local talent improved in leaps and bounds and was on track to secure her first national title at last year’s championship.
But a heavy fall during competition brought her 2014 title hopes to a thundering halt.
Disappointed but undeterred, the setback strengthened her resolve to win the title she deserved.
“She had a point to prove this year,” Cheryl said.
For her efforts, Miah won a $3500 saddle and almost $1000 in prizemoney and buckles.
The hardest part now for mum Cheryl was convincing her daughter to focus on her schoolwork.
“She wants to go to America and ride,” Cheryl said before adding they were planning a possible trial visit for Miah sometime soon.
Next on the schedule is a demonstration at the King of the Ranges Stockman’s Challenge at Murrurundi this weekend.
Miah thanked her sponsors Omega Feeds in Gunnedah for their support.
