The bluegrass band frontman was driving a Ford Econovan with fellow band members and former Gunnedah men, Ben McCauley and Nicholas Wright, when their vehicle and a Nissan Pulsar collided head-on along the New England Highway.
Emergency services were called to the crash at Rix’s Creek, north-west of Singleton just before 3.30pm.
The drivers of both vehicles, Mr McKenzie, 29, and a 17-year-old male, died at the scene.
Mr McCauley and Mr Wright, were seriously injured in the crash and were airlifed to John Hunter Hospital where they underwent surgery.
It is believed the injuries sustained by Mr McCauley and Mr Wright were not life-threatening.
The band members currently live in Newcastle and were travelling back to Gunnedah for gigs at the Boggabri Drovers Campfire, the Royal Hotel in Boggabri, Coolah and at the Railway Hotel over the weekend.
Fourth band member guitarist Ben Murphy was travelling overseas at the time of the accident, but is believed to be coming back to Australia.
Messages of support for the band and tributes to Mr McKenzie are flowing on Good Corn Liquor’s Facebook page.
The page posted a message to its supporters: “It is with the blessing of his family that we let you all know that our kernel Stuart ‘Stu’ McKenzie was tragically taken from us yesterday.
“Whether you knew Stu personally or as front man of Good Corn Liquor, you would describe him as one of a kind. Todays outpouring of love and support has been overwhelming and very much appreciated.
“Stu hated facebook and refused to sign up to it so no doubt would be shaking his head and mumbling at the ridiculousness of this.
“We would ask you to focus on the character that is Stu and feel free to share any classic Stu stories or memories under this post.
“We know the other boys are in everyones thoughts and whilst they have a long road to recovery, they are on it.
“Cheers to you Stu.”
Band manager Kendal Glover paid tribute to “Stu” and of the “legacy” he will leave behind.
“We appreciate all the messages of love and support and Stu is going to be really missed,” Ms Glover said.
“Good Corn Liquor’s last performance together was a week in the studio recording their next EP and its going to be an amazing legacy for a very talented man.”
Stu McKenzie’s funeral has been confirmed for this Friday, May 1 from 11am at Boggabri Community Church, 88 Laidlaw Street.
