Jenny has been diagnosed with chiari malfunction– a neurological disorder where part of the brain descends out of the skull and into the spinal area.
She has had a major operation and is facing expenses of up to $30,000.
Friend and fellow amateur photographer Debbie Thompson decided to help Jenny out with a competition that supports Jenny’s hobby.
The photographic competition asks people to send in their photos on the theme of “A photo that makes you smile”.
Jenny herself has kicked it off with photos of herself with one of her grandsons.
“She is very excited and happy with all the help the Gunnedah community has given her,” Debbie said. “In a country town, you are part of one big family.
“Some people ask me why I still live in Gunnedah, I think because it does feel like your extended family – everyone is always willing to help each other in that lovely country way. It is home.”
The entry fee of $10 will go to the Jenny Shorter Appeal, and entrants must send in a photo they have taken of something that makes them smile.
Entrants could win a Nikon Coolpix S9400 18.1mp digital camera valued at $329 thanks to Harvey Norman, with a second prize of a framed enlargement. The competition is supported by the Namoi Valley Independent and Montage Fotos. Photos will be displayed in the window of Montage Fotos, and some photos will feature in the NVI.
A jpeg can be sent to marie.low@fairfaxmedia.com.au, or you can post a 4” x 6” print to Photo Comp, PO Box 483, Gunnedah NSW 2380, or handed into the Namoi Valley Independent office
Entry fees must be paid at Beyond Bank, Conadilly Street into the Miners Support Group. Entrants should write the receipt number on the back of their photo, with their name, address and telephone number. For electronic entries, put receipt details with your email.
Entries close on Friday, May 22, and winners will be announced in the Namoi Valley Independent on Thursday, May 28.
