A momentum-building 10-point win was just what the Gunnedah Red Devils were looking for in last weekend’s competition opener.
The Devils pounded Pirates 25-15 in the round one Central North Rugby Union fixture at Gunnedah.
The Devils backline starred on Saturday with tries to centre Cameron Mitchell and fullback, Oscar Hunt.
Flanker Sam Michelsen also bagged a five-pointer.
Gunnedah held a slight two-point buffer at half-time and consolidated their set-pieces in the second period.
In reserve grade, the Devils fought on valiantly but lost a tight 21-19 encounter to the Pirates.
It was nearly an all-forward try scoring feast in reserve grade.
Big second-rower Matt Roseby, number eight Ed Howarth and interchange Mal Frend all crossed the line for a meat-pie.
In other first grade matches, Inverell won a close game against Scone 24-20; Narrabri beat Barraba 41-13; Moree just got home against Walcha 29-27 and Tamworth Magpies belted Quirindi 115-0.
The Red Devils face Moree at home next Saturday before taking a two-week bye.
