Barely a whisker separated the scores of local marksmen Shane Hobbs and Craig Tunbridge at the February round club shoot in Gunnedah recently.
The pair shot 1.407 and 1.408 respectively in the Heavy Barrel, Rimfire Benchrest shoot hosted by the Gunnedah branch of Sporting Shooters Association of Australia.
Held over two rounds at different distances, Hobbs shot a superb 1.152 in the 50-metre aggregate to Tunbridge’s marginally less accurate 1.339.
Roles reversed when scores were tallied for the 100-metre aggregate where Hobbs shot 1.662 to Tunbridge’s 1.447.
In the end just a fraction of a point was the difference between first and second place when grand aggregate totals were finalised.
Tamworth local Steve Nash got the edge over a five-strong Narrabri contingent in the Custom Class, Rimfire Benchrest.
Consistent shooting over both the 50m and 100m distances ensured Nash took home top honours despite his second-place rival, Cooper, recording the best Custom aggregate for day of .633.
The three Rimfire classes, Custom, Heavy and Light, were well supported by three divisions in Centrefire Benchrest as well.
Narrabri’s Chris Goulden was recorded the best figures in A grade while Nash cleaned up in B grade.
Nineteen firers in total turned out for the Gunnedah branch’s first official competition shoot of the year.
This Sunday’s event will be the Rimfire Field Rifle and Centrefire Field Rifle. Registration begins 10.30am for a 11am start and newcomers are welcome to attend (no experience necessary). The Gunnedah range is located a few kilometres past the Gunnedah Waste Management Facility on the left. Look for the red flag.
The club thanked Bill Howarth and Geoff Hodgins for volunteering their time to score.
