Sprintcar driver Steve Caunt gave as good he got to claim top honours in Saturday’s round seven War of Wings feature at Gunnedah Speedway.
Racing alongside son Kyle for the first time at the Gunnedah track, Caunt finished ahead of Mark Attard and Kellyville’s James Thompson.
Kyle placed a strong second in heat three, two positions ahead of his father.
Sydney driver Hayley Sayers crashed out during one of the final heats, hitting the concrete wall hard.
Bravely the night’s sole female sprintcar driver emerged from the wreck and was generously offered the services of another car to race later that night.
Regular Gunnedah driver Scott Riley took out first place in the fender benders feature, with his trademark green and black ute.
Second place went to Jamie Landrigan from Narrabri and third to fellow Gunnedah driver Jason Morton.
The street stockers was an all-Keeler show with dad Kevin placing first in the feature, just in front of son Todd and Steve Hall from Tamworth.
Todd secured the early lead after his win in heat one until brother Trent matched him and won the second.
The Coonabarabran clan are familiar faces at the Gunnedah Speedway and all are rarely far from the action.
Speedway promoter Barry Towers was hard pressed keeping his racing partners in check in the super sedans with fellow driver John Perkins taking the lead in the early heats.
Barry responded to post a win of his own in the third race of the night before making it a double with a win in the feature.
Barry has offered a big pay day for the next round of super sedans at Gunnedah.
The few hundred dollars in prizemoney has been increased to $7500 for the next meet on March 1 – a whopping $5000 of which will go to the winner.
“They’re trying to get some big drivers here for it and a big field,” a speedway spokesman said.
