A Gunnedah police spokesman said the silver Subaru sedan was stolen from Stewart Street sometime between Sunday evening and early Monday morning.
The car was located about 7am, half-submerged in the Namoi River near the Kamilaroi Highway and Blue Vale Road intersection.
The NSW SES Gunnedah Unit was called to assist at scene and was pictured on its Facebook page lowering members down the river bank and into the water.
Investigations are continuing yesterday in relation to the vehicle theft which is the second in Gunnedah in less than a fortnight.
Late last year, a Holden Commodore ute was stolen from a Curlewis address before being dumped and burnt about 20 kilometres away.
Two years ago in the same area of the river, vandals trashed and dumped letterboxes which belonged to nearby property owners.
