Fresh off a two-length win with Cool Sports in Coonabarabran, local trainer Gavin Groth is levering his position for Saturday’s Boggabri Community Race Day.
The Groth-trained four-year-old snatched a two-length win in the 900m Class 2 Handicap last weekend in Coona.
It could have been a winning double if not for the Gunnedah trainer’s second starter, Steel Academy, receiving an up-close encounter with the running rail earlier that day.
Steel Academy, should he get a run, is among Groth’s best picks in the six-race card at Riverside this weekend.
Also among the contenders is Darkness.
A battler to the end, the six-year-old endured a rough trot with illness late last year.
“He had a stomach virus but we couldn’t find out what it was,” Groth said.
“It took us the three blood tests to figure it out.”
Groth spelled the fighter for six months after his ordeal and looks to have emerged the other side fitter and stronger for it.
“He’s starting to make his way back to a couple of preps ago,” Groth said.
“His work suggests he’s on the way back.”
Also making a firm impression for Groth is new arrival About Time, which is settling in well since his move from South Australia earlier this year.
Groth has two earmarked for the 1000m maiden in Gemspur and Monserrate.
Owned by David Wellwood of Emerald Hill, both mares will start in their first race start on Saturday.
Fellow Gunnedah trainer Graham Shields has two nominated for the sought after Benchmark 50 in Segovian and Just as Dapper.
Sally Torrens has a few nominated from her Gunnedah stable as well including beautiful grey mare Emmylou, Devine Reign and Romanticize.
