A 25-year-old man is facing an upgraded charge of murder after the death of a 10-month-old boy he allegedly assaulted. The boy was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital in a critical condition in the early hours of Friday from a home at Warrane in Hobart's eastern suburbs. Daniel John Ridgers was charged on Sunday with causing grievous bodily harm to a child. Tasmania Police on Monday issued a statement saying the baby had died. "(The) charge has now been upgraded to murder," police said in a statement. "Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and loved ones of the baby." Ridgers, who appeared in an after-hours court session on Sunday, is expected to reappear in Hobart Magistrates Court on Monday. Australian Associated Press
