A crime investigator, two rural officers and a part-time administration support person will operate out of the town's local police station.

Gunnedah mayor Jamie Chaffey said the "immediate action" to combat crime would see the specialised officers supporting the dedicated local team and helping the community.
"I look forward to seeing these increased resources drive down the surging rate of crimes, such as theft of motor vehicles and break-and-enters," he said.

Cr Chaffey said it was a start but he was still calling for police to staff the multi-million-dollar Gunnedah Police Station around the clock.
The announcement was made public after a meeting involving the Oxley and western region commanders, Cr Chaffey and Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson.
A timeline for the officers' arrival hasn't been confirmed. Separately, an officer has accepted a permanent position in Tambar Springs.
