Garry Milgate, 52, is accused of forcing his way into a house on Hinds Street in Narrabri before assaulting a resident inside and threatening him with a hammer just after 6am.
He allegedly fled the scene before police arrived and detectives launched an investigation.
Forensic testing at the crime scene and police inquiries led detectives to a home on Baranbar Street in Narrabri just hours later.

Milgate was arrested about 10:30am on Monday and was taken to the local police station, where he spent the night in custody.
Milgate will remain behind bars for the festive season, after his release was refused by magistrate Peter Thompson during a mention in Coonamble Local Court on Tuesday.
Milgate has not yet been required to enter a plea to the single charge of aggravated armed break and enter.
Police allege the attack was not random and claim Milgate and the 31-year-old man he allegedly assaulted during the break-in, are known to each other.
The matter will go back before the court in March next year.
