Just six weeks ago, 18-year-old Jorja-Louise Howard created headlines not long after securing her trainer's licence, by registering a winning double at Maitland, with just her second and third starters at the races.
While she has had an instant impact, Jorja-Louise will put her training on hold for six months early next year when she attends the NSW Police Academy at Goulburn, having already completed a university course to become a policewoman.
Two weeks ago, another teenager, 18-year-old Mackayla Clarke, armed with a freshly acquired licence, boxed her first ever runner, and the lightly-raced Wishing, did the right thing and gave her trainer the perfect start to her career, winning at Richmond.
And last week at Casino, 20-year-old Will Griffiths took time out from doing a double degree at university to train his first winner, when Liar Teller charged home to win.
Will got his first taste of the sport after many visits to the property of his uncle, Casino trainer Doug King.
"I would go to his place and see the dogs and then I started going to the Casino track and really enjoyed it, and thought I'd get a few of my own," Will explained.
"Through my uncle I met the Northfields, and they have been very helpful with me, and I actually got Liar Teller from Charlie Northfield."
Will has three dogs in work currently and for the time being, that's enough.
"I'm a university student at the moment at QUT (Queensland University of Technology) in Brisbane," Will said.
"I'm doing a double degree in Business and Biomedical Science, doing it online at the moment due to border restrictions, so my weekdays are made up of a mix of that, and the dogs. And I'm really enjoying it."
