Freethinker has broken through for Sally Torrens.
The gelding was having his third run for the Gunnedah trainer on Tuesday at Moree in the Austral Wire Products Maiden Handicap (950m).
Freethinker was on the quick back-up after racing at Tamworth on July 12.
The decision to get back on the track was the right one as Freethinker hit the line hard to win by 0.61 lengths.
The three-year-old beat home the Mark Schmetzer-trained Mackinaw who led for the majority of the straight before Freethinker went past about 50 metres from home.
Speaking to Australian Community Media last month, Torrens gave some insight into what Freethinker was like at home.
"He's a bit of a dude. He's got his own little quirks but he's generally a good, little horse," she said.
"He's a cheeky, little fella."
Meanwhile, fellow Gunnedah Gavin Groth finished in the placings in the maiden handicap at Moree.
Jazzee Up finished 1.33 lengths back from Freethinker in third.
