Rural crime detectives are investigating the diesel theft on Gunnembene Lane at Carroll, between Tamworth and Gunnedah.
Police said the tank contained about 3000 litres of diesel and offenders drained a quantity of fuel before leaving the remainder of the tank to spill onto the ground.
Oxley police were alerted to the trespass and theft, and rural crime detectives have taken charge of the investigation.

Investigators believe the diesel tank was illegally accessed between June 21 and 22, and are now appealing for public help.
Police want to speak to anyone that might have seen suspicious vehicles in the Gunnembene Lane area, which is off the Oxley Highway, just on the edge of the Carroll township.
They also want to speak to anyone who might have witnessed suspicious activity in the Carroll area on the Monday and Tuesday in question, last week.
