Three teams of year 11 and 12 students from Quirindi High School and a team of year 12 students from Manilla Central School battled it out on Tuesday for the NSW 2021 Royal Australian Chemical Institute Titration competition.

The students had to complete a set of acid-base titrations to determine the unknown concentration of a weak acid within 90 minutes.

Quirindi High School hosted the regional leg of the event, which science teacher Peter Roberts said was "extremely exciting".

"It's a national competition that runs right across NSW and Australia however every other venue is a university or a large school in a city centre so it's very exciting for our students and other students that they can come to a regional school and take part in a prestigious national competition," he said.

"I do want to be a maths teacher when I finish school so opportunities like this are incredible in developing that passion and nurturing it," he said.

"This experiment really relies on precision so it's about honing your skills to find that exact concentration of a substance using the known concentration of another substance."

Manilla Central School captain Jess Paull said her team had been practicing for a few weeks in class to ready themselves for the competition.

She also loves science, especially the animal side of biology.

"I'm hopefully going to uni to study animal sciences, it's not really related to this but it's some sort of science which I enjoy," she said.

Mr Roberts said the analytical and measurement skills developed in the event would help the students in their future careers.

The winning team could have the chance to take on the national competition later in the year.
