At 11am on Wednesday, May 19, Gunnedah library will join participants across Australia and take part in the National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS).
NSS is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.
Now in its 21st successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy.
Last year 1,297,825 participants from more than 14,469 locations enjoyed Whitney and Britney Chicken Divas. 1 in 19 people in Australia were reading or listening, to this book simultaneously.
There were also participants from New Zealand, Thailand, the UK, Canada, Singapore, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia and Hong Kong.

Spotlight: Give Me Some Space
The book selected for the 2021 NSS is Give Me Some Space! by Philip Bunting.
Main character Una has always been fascinated by space, and she describes herself as an 'astronaut-in-waiting'. Too impatient to wait until she grows tall enough, she takes off on a journey of discovery through the solar system, fortified with cheese sandwiches and astronaut ice cream.
She hopes to find evidence of life in space, and what she discovers by the end of the book is a revelation to her - and to readers.
