The Darryl Rando-coached Tigers started well but some simple errors cost them dearly.
The Rams scored first through Sam Lane but Luke Smith hit back for the Tigers to level it up at 6-all. Just when the Tigers looked like they may take charge the Rams scored (Lachlan Lawson) and went to the break 12-6 up.
Another converted Western Rams try through Cooper Egan edged the visitors out to a 12-point lead and another penalty from Braye Porter gave the Rams a 20-6 advantage.
Some costly errors stalled the Tiger charge with a late try out wide to winger Alex Lawrence little compensation for their hard work.
Rando was philosophical after the game.
He told his young players there would be "no training this Friday regardless of whether the side has made the semis".
"Hopefully we do have one or two more games yet," Rando said.
"The boys played well, put in a good effort.
"Simple errors cost us but that's footy. Those boys might not make that same again error again this season. Hopefully we do make the semis but we showed today we know we can compete.
"We're not that far off if we can get those little errors out of our game."
WESTERN RAMS 20 (Lachlan Lawson, Samuel Lane, Cooper Egan tries, Braye Porter 4gls) d GREATER NORTHERN TIGERS 10 (Luke Smith, Alex Lawrence tries, Mitch Henderson gl).
