The first of four Weeks of Speed events hosted by Tamworth Drag Racing Association (TDRA) at Gunnedah will kick off on the weekend of March 6 and 7.

TDRA president Bill Ausling president said he's hopeful there will be some spectators, too.

"As the rules stand at the moment it's looking promising that we can get back to spectators, but as we've learnt over the last 12 months that can change overnight," he said.

"We will still make a last minute call depending on the Covid rules made in Sydney due to the hotspots that keep coming up as it affects us just as much as it affects them."

Ausling said the Gunnedah track was very fortunate to be one of the few places still able to race when Covid hit last year.

Despite government restrictions on gatherings, TDRA were still able to hold three of their four Gunnedah events in 2020, with the last event held at the start of November.

"We got good competition numbers, people do really enjoy the travel," he said.

"Over 80 per cent of the people that attend Gunnedah motor sports are willing to travel quite a distance to enjoy the event, the hospitality of Gunnedah and a weekend away.

"And some of those travel the distance to come to every event we have."

TDRA Weeks of Speed racing events will also be held on May 8 and 9, August 8 and 9 and October 30 and 31.
