Agar pulled up limp while batting at the death in Wednesday night's ODI loss, requiring on-field treatment to bat on.

The 27-year-old only came into Australia's team late on Wednesday but is a far more permanent fixture in the T20 side where the hosts prefer playing two spinners.

Teammates were unsure on Thursday if Agar would be fit to play Friday night, with the team not training and the day slated for recovery.

"I'm not too sure how bad it is but it was incredibly brave for him to keep fighting out there in the middle," debutant Cameron Green said.

"Trying his heart out for Australia, and exactly what makes them proud. Hopefully it's not too bad and he's ready to go for these games."

Starc, meanwhile, sat out Wednesday's ODI dead rubber, with officials wanting to give a sore rib time to heal after Australia had already wrapped up the series.

The left-armer's issue is not believed to be serious, and his inclusion would be key given Australia are already without the rested Pat Cummins in the T20s.

"Hopefully he (Starc) is right for the T20s, it's a bit of a little niggly back or rib injury that just hangs around for a little bit," captain Aaron Finch said.

"Even a couple of days can have a huge impact on that recovery. Hopefully, he is good to go in a few days."

The hosts must also decide how to rejig their order without David Warner, with D'Arcy Short an option to open while Alex Carey could also shift to the top.

Even after Wednesday's 13-run loss, Australia dominated in their 2-1 ODI series victory.

But they won't expect things to be so easy in the T20s.

India have not been beaten in the format since the start of last December, winning six since then to go with two ties against New Zealand.

All of their players are coming fresh out of T20 cricket, with KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan the two leading run-scorers in this year's IPL.

Hardik Pandya had one of the tournament's best strike-rates, while Jasprit Bumrah was the IPL's best bowler with 27 wickets at 14.96.

Australia's record in recent years is, however, just as good.

Since last February when they began to turn an eye to what was meant to be a home World Cup in 2020, they have won 10 of their past 13 T20s.

They were also the top-ranked Twenty20 team in the world until earlier this week and can return there above England with a win on Friday night.
