Community Picnic Concert
At Home - Friday December 4
Ho, ho, ho. Welcome to the Christmas season. It's been the kind of year where we've been looking forward to the festivities - and the food. Perhaps you're dreaming of a white pavlova (maybe with some cherries on top). The best of Christmas will come together at a picnic concert in town this weekend. Pack a picnic, find a rug to throw down to lounge on and loosen up the lungs for some Christmas singalongs at Kitchener Park. Capping off the night will be a fireworks display (you can add your own flourish with a glo stick if you want). Gates will open at 6.30. Concert, Kitchener Park, 31A Wentworth St, Gunnedah

One of these is the Crossing Theatre's annual event, which will be held on December 12. It's going to be free (who doesn't love a freebie) but ticketed, so that more people can get along. Christmas Hams Race Day
At home
Who doesn't love a day at the races? A chance to get dressed up (as it's summer, perhaps Santa hats and Hawaiian shirts will be your choice) and maybe have a bet or two. It looks like being hot, but a bit showery, on Saturday for this year's Gunnedah Jockey Club Christmas Hams and Christmas Party Race Day, so best to pack an umbrella. No ticket? Sorry, it's booked out. Put this one in your diary for next year, if that is the case. December 5, 11am, Riverside Racecourse, 1 Wilkinson Road, Gunnedah.
ART WORD PLACE
Plan ahead
This exhibition has already won fans after touring last year and it now stops in Gunnedah, with local artists Anne Bell and Maree Kelly featuring. What will you see? The exhibition looks at the interplay between text and images, with 18 writers creating short poems about their home landscapes and then artists creating works based on the words. Explore this unique journey at the Gunnedah Bicentennial Creative Arts Gallery at 81 Chandos St from December 18 to January 31. Book tickets online.
