The competition is a unique team-versus-team format, providing a fun and exciting event for swimmers and spectators.
With no official timing, non-traditional events, and team-based scoring, the new program provides an exciting sporting experience while remaining true to the spirit of swimming - hard racing. As part of the deal with Swimming NSW, Adam Beisler is travelling with officials to oversee the program after delays to the original season due to COVID-19.
The schedule for Swim League 2020 comprises 10 gala days across Sydney, regional NSW and the ACT for the modified season, providing plenty of options to get swimmers back to racing in a fun setting.
With no qualifying times, no technical officials and no pressure, the swimmers were placed in mixed teams of boys and girls from different clubs in junior (9-12 years) and senior divisions (13 years plus) and the excitement was electric, with catchy music playing while competitors were in the water.
Points were awarded for each place getter and at the end of the day, many local swimmers came out on top, with Zach Akinyemi, Felicity Gough, Luke Osland, Matthew McInnes and William Jensen representing in the junior Bisons team (Division 3). Jedd Rennick, Amelia Lush and Brooke Rennick swam with the senior Bisons team (division 2).
The winning Angels team (Division 3) included Gunnedah's Tahnee Steele, Alexis and Cooper Whitton, Joshua and Katie Spinks and Charlie Shorter, with Andre Steele, Brodie Coombs, Brodie Coombs, Lara Hewitt and Sarah Kemp competing in the first placed senior Division 2 of the Angels. The junior Division 2 Angels team included Jacob Smith, Tahlia Smith, Baxter Knapman, Xanthe Hewitt and Lachlan Davey.
The Rangers junior team claimed victory in Division 2, with Gunnedah swimmers Audrey Hannaford, Dana Campbell, Danika Jones and Thahni Bush among the excited winners.
Alice Swain held the flag high in the senior Rangers team, with Lachlan Stewart, Matilda Denovan and Sienna Swain turning in pleasing performances in the juniors (Division 3).
Events included medley relays, 100m medleys, 25 and 50m events and brace relays in freestyle and backstroke. The events also included 4x50m freestyle and medley relays.
Swimming Gunnedah coach John Hickey was pleased with the performance of his charges and the parents and swimmers were equally delighted with results on the day.
On Saturday a number of swimmers took part in a development program with NSW Regional development coach Chris Myers who had been working in Tamworth and Armidale with squads and coaches.
Th program included a swim component and a video segment in the club room with those involved taking away valuable information and experience for the future.
