Specialist police from Tamworth and detectives were back at the family farm on the outskirts of town on Friday, collecting evidence in the case.

It's there that the police allege a teenage girl, who cannot be identified, killed the young child, who was related to her.

A post-mortem will be conducted, and it's believed several people including friends have spoken with detectives as they try and piece together the events that led to Wednesday morning.

The accused has been moved from the police holding cells into juvenile detention after she was refused bail in Tamworth Children's Court on Thursday morning.

Much of the detail surrounding the case, including anything that could identify the families involved, has been suppressed by order of the court.

Strike Force Wilima - the operation set-up in the wake of the alleged murder - is being led by Oxley detectives.

Investigators allege the murder occurred in a 20-minute window at the farm, after 7am.

The young girl was arrested nearby by police.

On Thursday, police rescue, specially-trained officers and SES crews conducted a line search of the family farm, surrounding paddocks and the roadway.

That was completed, with a handful of police still seen at the farm on Friday as investigations continued.

Locals are still trying to come to grips with the events of Wednesday. Council and the education department are working with support services who are rallying to offer help to those trying to process the news, especially friends of the accused.

The NVI has been told extra counsellors have been sent to Gunnedah to offer support for those that need it.
