The organisation was successful for a grant of $1224 through the Gunnedah Shire Council Arts and Cultural Grants Fund, which will be used to create a mural with the help of children in the area.

Winanga-Li educator Daisy Jaeger will head up the project and said the aim was to involve all schools, early learning centres and preschools in Gunnedah.

"There's not many things in Gunnedah that connect the schools together - everyone does their own separate thing - so we thought we could do an art project that could in some way connect us together," Ms Jaeger said.

She said the theme of the mural would draw from what culture means to every individual.

"Each school can take their own interpretation on that and draw from their own school and personal experiences," she told the NVI.

"[They] will be able to do their own artwork and come up with their own ideas."

Ms Jaeger, along with engagement and development manager Kate McGrath, are hoping the mural will feature in the front play area of the centre, so passersby can see it from the street.

But they have big ideas for future projects.

"Our hope is that if this is a success, we can do a more public display, maybe in the main street, somewhere so the kids can see their artworks out in public," Ms Jaeger said.

Both ladies are uncertain when the project might start because of COVID-19, but Ms Jaeger said she was hopeful it would be finished by the end of the year if restrictions continued to ease.
