SAFETY concerns and 'near misses' have prompted the local council to change up traffic rules in the Gunnedah CBD.

Gunnedah Shire Council will extend the high activity pedestrian zone, meaning more of the town's streets will be dropped to a speed limit of 40km/hr.
The new slow-go area runs from the CBD section of Conadilly Street to Little Barber Street and Little Conadilly Street, on either side of the main drag.
The high activity pedestrian zone starts at the Gunnedah Services and Bowling Club and extends about 600 metres to the town hall roundabout.

Other new safety measures to be put in place include raised pedestrian blisters and kerb ramps in a number of the town's central streets, like Abbott Street, Conadilly Street, Elgin Street and Chandos Street.
New stickers will be put up near crossings to remind locals to look out for traffic before stepping out.
Gunnedah mayor Jamie Chaffey said everyone deserved to feel safe in their town.
"Our community had expressed concern after a number of near misses in the CBD," Cr Chaffey said.
"The centre of Gunnedah is a hub for community and cultural activities, and the safety of both adults and children is critical."
The changes were made after an audit was reviewed by the Local Traffic Committee, the shire council and Transport NSW.

"This will remind motorists that this is a place for people, and it is essential to drive with care."
Gunnedah Shire Council has secured $106,000 in funding from Transport NSW to complete the project.
