A TRUCK carrying more than 600 sheep crashed near Spring Ridge on Thursday afternoon, killing more than 200 of the animals.

The 49-year-old driver of the B-double escaped injury after rolling the truck while taking a right-hand bend on Coonabarabran Road, 65 kilometres south of Gunnedah.
Police understand the truck was travelling east when the driver lost control causing the truck to roll onto the driver's side.

The truck was carrying 620 head of sheep at the time of the accident, of which more than 260 were killed or euthanised due to injuries.
The remaining sheep were mustered into a nearby set of holding yards and were collected.
Liverpool Plains Shire Council road crews attended the scene to help with the clean up of the sheep.
While the driver escaped without injury, he was issued an infringement notice by police for negligent driving.
