It means the public will be able to see exactly how many cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Tamworth, Gunnedah, the Liverpool Plains and Walcha.

The push started with Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall who took to Facebook to express his concerns about the lack of clear information.

Mr Marshall condemned Hunter New England Health that refused to give local case numbers, it has since been bypassed by NSW Health and Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant.

"This is one source of truth that everyone can see and access, it will prevent or remove the need for speculation and rumours on social media, which has taken up a lot of authorities time to dispel," he said.

"It gives people confidence and certainty to make whatever decisions on the basis of being upfront about the virus how spreading and what the numbers are."

Hunter New England Health had refused to provide specific case numbers even to NSW Police, Mr Marshall said.

"To me keeping the community in the dark is bad enough, but to keep police in the dark with a legal obligation to be involved in these matters, it is reprehensible and they will be condemned in our community's eyes," he said.

The new data will explain whether a positive COVID-19 case contracted the disease locally or overseas.

The updates on local cases are expected to go live today.

In a pandemic, the public need clear information to make decisions about their health, Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson said.

"It will bring home the reality of how serious this situation is and certainly bring home the message that people do need to abide by the current movement restrictions in place in our communities," he said.

"If there's a void in information, keyboard warriors will fill that void with misinformation which is critical to making sure we put the right information out for the community to understand."
