Gunnedah Water Tower Museum is lamenting the loss of its high visitor numbers as it makes the decision to close its vast collection to the public for the time being.

The Gunnedah and District Historical Society met on Monday to discuss the implication of the coronavirus pandemic and member Marie Hobson said they "decided it was a health and safety issue for us".

"We made a decision ... to protect our volunteers. We're all in that vulnerable age group. We're all retired seniors and some of our members have had ill health and they can't afford to be exposed to anything. It's purely to protect our volunteers," she said.
"We're not accepting any visitors at all, which is a shame because we had some coaches booked in."
An increase of almost 500 per cent in visitation at the museum has buoyed the society since the Vietnam War memorial murals were launched on Anzac Day in 2019.
Mrs Hobson stressed that the murals could still be viewed, day and night, and the members were still contactable by phone, email and Facebook to help people with inquiries.
