Councillor Murray O'Keefe argued against the motion put forward at the meeting to move the allocation of $35,000 for the sign to 2020/2021, saying it's already been deferred for too long.

The council put forward the recommendation to move the date because work "could not commence until council had a clearer picture of traffic impacts" after the new Gunnedah bridge project was complete.

But the councillor did not agree with this.

"The project has been deferred and kicked along for a while as we try and decide where is the best place to put it [but I] wanted to make sure it didn't keep getting pushed back and become a zombie project," Cr O'Keefe said.

Cr Ann Luke backed his beliefs, and said there was "no reason why we should wait".

"I think we should move sooner rather than later ... there's years going by and it's such a useful tool," Cr Luke said.

Cr O'Keefe also wants to see more than one new sign in town, with his location ideas including the highway to Boggabri and west on the Mullaley Road.

"We shouldn't be limiting ourselves to only have one welcome to Gunnedah sign and electronic message board that advertises the town and what's happening in Gunnedah to residents and visitors to town," he said.

"West of the inclusive playground is potentially a good place, with people driving through that section of town and going to the inclusive playground."

The sign in Kitchener Park was first installed in 2014, and while Cr O'Keefe is happy with keeping this sign for the time being, he said a more modernised sign was needed.

He noted signs in Dubbo and Narromine as examples.

"They're modern signs that are large enough and high-resolution enough to play videos of what there is to do and see," he said.
