A lightning strike to the network is believed to be the likely cause of the unplanned outage.
"Electricity network protection equipment operated automatically, switching power off to 315 homes and businesses in the Gunnedah area at 2.20am, after sensing a fault," Mr Summers said.
The operations manager said crews responded immediately and carried a patrol of the electricity network.
"No fault was found and after ensuring it was safe to do so, power was restored to all customers at 8.55am [on Wednesday morning]," he said.
Essential Energy reminds the public to report fallen or damaged powerlines immediately by calling 13 20 80 and to stay at least eight metres away from the line and anything in contact with it.
"The safety of the public, their property and our crews is our first priority and we thank customers for their patience as we work to restore power after the storms," Mr Summers said.
