A spokesperson for Gunnedah Shire Council said sealing of the second kilometre of the 17.6km stretch was now under way.
The $8.2 million upgrade was started in late 2018 in response to safety concerns for locals and travellers and was the result of more than 10 years of lobbying.
"To date, the project is on time. It faces similar challenges to other road projects including the heat and dust we are all experiencing, which can affect visibility and some of the machinery," the spokesperson said.
"Once completed, the road will enable Heavy Mass Limit (HML) vehicles to traverse from Mullaley to Boggabri. The route is currently general mass limited (GML)."
The project is funded by the local, state and federal governments.
