Certificate II in vocational skills, engineering and electrotechnology/automotive may soon be on offer if there is interest from locals aged 17-24.

It could be funded through a $200,000 investment from Minister for Skills and Teritiary Education Geoff Lee.

Namoi Valley Bricks owner and Gunnedah Chamber of Commerce member Michael Broekman has been calling for the course for months, and is urging locals to register their interest.

"Gunnedah has a great opportunity but it's reliant on students taking part so the chamber urges students and parents to look into the course criteria and assess it against their educational direction and if they think it may suit their needs, jump in, get your name down and take advantage of it," Mr Broekman said.

"It gives students the chance to get themselves work ready especially at the moment as we're in the midst of a drought ... this is a great opportunity for students to get hands-on skills and work readiness in order to tap into the opportunities that will be created through 2020/2021."

The 12-month course would be held four days a week and would give students the "ability to experience civil construction, welding fabrication and electrotechnology". If there is enough interest, the course would begin in early February.

Locals aged 17-24 are encouraged to contact Gunnedah Shire Council, the chamber via Facebook, or a local job agency such as JobsLink, JOBS Australia or BEST Employment to register their interest.

Gunnedah TAFE is currently undergoing upgrades wotrh $3.36 million, and is set to finish by the first day of classes this year.
